2016 Bishop’s Convocation at Seabeck Conference Center
Tuesday, January 26 (11am)-Wednesday, January 27 (3pm)
“The Pastor as Mentor of Faith Formation in the Congregation”
“Doesn’t the world desperately need educated Christians?” With this simple question, Martin Luther began a monumental reform of congregational life by recasting the pastor as a leader in faith formation. In this interactive conference, participants will consider the challenges as well as the opportunities to enliven adult formation/adult education in a regional culture very different than Luther’s. There will be time for small group discussion, presentations, quiet reflection, considering resources in adult formation, and a short workshop on how to prepare and lead an adult forum or series in the parish.
Samuel Torvend serves as University Chair in Lutheran Studies at Pacific Lutheran University. In that role, he directs workshops and seminars for congregational leaders on adult education, congregational development, preaching, and stewardship of life. Ordained in 1986, his focus in parish ministry remains in adult formation that informs service in the world. He is the author of Flowing Water, Uncommon Birth: Christian Baptism in a Post-Christian Culture (2011), Luther and the Hungry Poor: Gathered Fragments (2008), and Daily Bread, Holy Meal: Opening the Gifts of Holy Communion, all published by Fortress.
